Hello! I am Angelisse Colon and I am a Full IB senior in DP Visual Art at Ronald Wilson Reagan College Preparatory High school. Ever since I was little I have had an interest in art and over time it grew. As a result I chose to pursue art during my time in High school.
My vision for presenting the body of work is to follow an overall theme since the beginning. The theme this body of works shows is relationships. The types of relationships I wanted to show were broad in order to create a theme that was transferable throughout the exhibition pieces. This also included relationships between people such as friendships or couples, and the relationship between people and themselves. Due to this theme some topics that I came across throughout the time I were mental health, nostalgia, and hardships within relationships.
Particular issues, motifs or ideas have been explored by depicting all of these subtopics. An example of this would be the piece I made regarding the mental health of someone close to me, they inspired me to make Through the eyes of my Butterfly. This piece is very symbolistic in the sense that the butterfly is meant to represent not only them but how they view themselves. Since butterflies are unable to see their colors much like some people aren’t able to see their true worth, this results in many other people seeing the truth. An example of nostalgia would be one of my artworks called Passing Youth. This piece is based on real life experiences, it is a 2D pointillism piece inspired by the neo-impressionist Paul Signac. This is a representation of how I feel about growing older and looking back at my past. An example of hardships within relationships would be my block print and triptych. Within my triptych I paint faces of stages in my friendship with a former best friend this was through the art style Lichtenstein often used. I used blue to represent sadness, yellow to represent happiness, and pink to represent hidden upsetness. I used the color white to show pure intentions and red to represent slight anger or annoyance together making the color pink. Lastly’ green to signify the envy I felt at the time because others were in their life rather than me.
Throughout my 10 artworks there hasn’t been one medium I have used the entire time I decided it was best if I explored a range of different mediums. Mediums I have used in the last 2 years in IB Visual Arts are watercolor/acrylic/gouache painting, multimedia, lens based, printmaking and sculpture.
Due to the virtual learning environment not everyone had access to a blank public area. In order to resolve this problem I decided that it would be best to create a gallery tab onto my public weebly website. I did this because as long as people have a device with the internet there is a way for them to access the gallery anywhere. The way I exhibited the artwork contributes to the meanings I am trying to convey to the audience in a sense because it is an example of my theme. The relationship between the viewer and my artworks is much more attainable and manageable.
Overall throughout my 10 pieces of artwork I tried my best to create an aesthetic appeal to draw in the viewers, but i think the viewers can connect to most are the real world situations they all tend to represent. For example many people can relate to mental health and hardships within relationships, while others may relate to the nostalgia of youth this is shown mostly through symbolistic impact.
The way the 10 artworks are arranged support the connection to my them relationships because they were all in real time. By looking at the first artwork to the last artwork there is an evident connection throughout but also involvement of ideas and thorough inspirations. This connects the viewers and by intentions of interpretation I’d like the viewer to conclude. Overall I want the viewer to feel emotionally impacted when they see and know the meaning of my work. I would like them to understand the amount of personalization and thought that went into each of the pieces, I’d like the viewer to see and cultivate a personal connection between themselves and at least one of my pieces of art. I hope for viewers to learn relationships always have more than one perspective.
