Inspiration:
I was inspired by my already known knowledge on how the student was always having difficulty whenever they were getting to or leaving the school. What was also a major inspiration was during the holidays last year we played a secret santa game in which I got them. They asked for a fancy water bottle which I didn't get to give them and now they have a fancy water bottle that is quite a pain for them to carry around everywhere and store away when they are no longer using it. We also had MIAD industrial designers come in and give us tips on what they thought about our projects this had an impact on what i wanted to change about my project as well.
Planning & Process:
Empathy chart
Who I met
The person I met was a student athlete who attends Reagan High school I was surprised when I found out that they had a problem which was having carrying around a massive water bottle everywhere. It would be amazing if we could create a convenient and storable water bottle that still carries more than 16 oz of water. |
Mind Map
In this stage I had made a written mind map. This was to encourage the flow of thoughts and new ideas during the process of thinking and sketching what they wanted.
During the process I met up with the student I was working with and we discussed what were some things they wanted, what they felt, and we talked about what I could do to change the issues. After that I made the Empathy chart Explaining some of the things we observed, felt, thought, and the stories I heard. Then i went on Photopea and uploaded pictures, used the lasso tool to only keep the parts that I wanted on there and cut the rest out. I edited the piece and wrote in some text explaining what the sketches were about. I make the original layer the size of 20 in x 30 in to be able to print it onto foam core later on. Later on we had industrial designers from MIAD come in to discuss our project and tell us what they thought of our presentation. They gave us a few pointers on what they thought we could improve and they told me that I could use color to make the main ideas pop and that I could also use a title to make the idea clear. These were some of the things I took into consideration when I edited my print again on Photopea. Then when I thought it was what I wanted I downloaded it as a Photo Shop Document in case I needed to get back to the layers to edit which I did a few times. Then I saved it as a JPG as well and uploaded it onto a flash drive. After this I plugged the USB into the printer and I printed the image. Lastly I cut of the access paper and glued the print onto the foam core. For this we needed a partner while they held the print we guided it to the edges and and rubbed the print onto the board with my hand then extra scrap paper to ensure it glued well.

Sketches
Experimentation:
During this process I had the most difficulty with photo shopping images, creating what they wanted, and also incorporating what I thought would be most convenient. The photo editing program I used was Photopea what was most difficult was figuring out how to use the tools and how to use the layers. After a while of experimenting it became a bit easier but if I were to ever do this project again I would need take more time on the website. I also had difficulty trying to create a sketch I knew what we both wanted incorporated in words but visually I just couldn't imagine it. One way I tried to fix this was to just sketch right away and find what I wanted in the art.
Reflection:
The students ideal type of water bottle was one that has enough space for water, is less heavy for them since they have to carry a lot of stuff during their sports, all year. What I originally though was that the water bottle should be solar resistant so that it doesn't warm the water and what they thought was that that didn't matter because they usually have it under a backpack or their sport takes place inside of a building. This is what I needed to adapt to what they wanted to changed perspectives and focused more on their struggles rather than what I saw on the surface area.
ACT Responses:
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its affect on your artwork?
- One thing they wanted was for the water bottle to be light and that got me thinking why not make it convenient to put away it would be small compact and fit enough to be put away easily.
What is the overall approach of the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
- I think the student wanted something that was able to hold enough water and travel without hassle.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
- During this project I learned that people tend to go with their first idea most of the time and sometimes you just need to map out your ideas in order to find something that is more suitable for what you are trying to achieve.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
- I believe the central idea around my inspirational research is that the water bottle should be able to be compact so that the student athlete will be less stressed about having everything with them the entire time.
What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis if evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
- I made the inference that if I want to make the water bottle compact I might need to find another way to make the bottle rotate into a shape that's smaller.
