Through the eyes of my Butterfly
22.9 x 30.5 cm Colored pencil October 2020 Exhibition Text Through the eyes of Butterflies is meant to be a symbolic piece about how not all people can see their true value and beauty whilst others do. Butterflies are said to be colorblind which is why they wouldn't be able to see their true colors. This is why this piece is meant to be symmetrical like the butterfly's wings. I decided to create a piece which is butterfly inspired much like John Keane's piece "Survival strategies"- 2001. |
Inspiration
Planning
During the planning stage I decided to make many mini sketches of an overall concept I wanted to create an art piece over. I started with brain storming what it really was i wanted the viewer to see and to most importantly interoperate from just looking at the piece. I wanted the viewer to see an interpretation of the way one sees their worth. Then I began to think about some symbolic or metaphorical things that could relate to worth or how someone/something sees themselves. I then began listening to music and while song after song past the word that stuck out to me was butterfly. I then realized i remembered learning about butterflies in elementary school, I remembered them only being able to see the world in black and white tones. After this I began looking up Butterfly related artworks by known artists. After scrolling through art pieces for a while I finally found one that sparked my interest, Keane's piece "Survival strategies"- 2001.

Process
During this stage I went to all my planning sketches and had to pick which one i wanted to use for the project. After this I then began more sketching and tried to create a final piece size rough draft for the piece. I first created the right side of the piece then used the transfer method and translated it onto the other side as well. I used another paper put it on top of my right side traced it flipped it onto its back and traced the opposing side. After that i shaded in the back of the piece i wanted to put into the left side, then placed it as close as possible to create a mirrored image. Then trace on top of the unshaded side in order to leave the pigmentation of the shades lines I trace into the page under the tracing paper. After the light pigmentation is left into the page below I go over it again but darker so the lines are visible to me for later use.
