Pointillist piece
Self portrait
Size Blue pen pointillism November 2020 Exhibition Text: The purpose of this piece is to portray myself through a pointillist lens. Rather than the landscape portrait, “The Pine Tree at St. Tropez, 1909" like Paul Signac, I chose to create a dot portrait. This was for self love, in order to feel more valuable i thought that picking a photograph I thought I looked nice in, I would see the flaws I have. This was be more evident as I continued to place dots onto the paper and was helpful. |
Inspiration:
The piece that inspired me was Paul Signac's "The Pine Tree at St. Tropez, 1909". This piece inspired me due to its technique and the amount of color it has. Paul Signac is an impressionism artist in the beginning impressionism was not widely accepted but partly due to Signac the view on impressionism changed drastically.

Planning and Process:
I thought of potentially creating drawings or other 2D pieces but ultimately I ended up deciding on making a pointillist. While I was planning I had to think of what I wanted to do and what i wanted it to mean. I began by looking around on the internet at art pieces that I liked. I then found Paul Signac's piece, “The Pine Tree at St. Tropez, 1909" I then began looking into pointillism more. Then i started by taking a few photos then I chose one, After this I grabbed my sketch book made a box and began sketching the photo out. When i finished sketching I grabbed a blue pen and I started by picking an area that would be really dark, which in this case was the hair. I tried to fill in the area very darkly since in the photo my hair was the darkest factor. Then I started to outline the figure with more dots to create shadow and depth. After this I filled in the facial features starting with the eyes I ensured to leave a white space near the pupil in order for it to look like a reflection of light. I defined the cheekbones by placing more stippling in the area creating more shadow that the original picture had. I then began to go towards the lighter areas on the hat and created a highlight affect by using the stippling technique lightly. This by putting down dots in some places more than others it gives the illusion of a higher saturation. After finishing the lighter area I began to slowly go into the darker areas leaving them more tinted than the ones i did previously.

Experimentation:
During this stage i found that there were many thing i liked and disliked about my project. Some of the things i think were well done were the dots that made outer outlines for the hair, and also the use of light and dark within the piece. I had to ultimately guess the technique due to the fact there were no close up p.o.v's of The Pine Tree at St. Tropez, 1909" this was a challenge for me. Something i did to over come it was try my best to look at the technique Paul Signac used. I tried overlapping many of the points which at times made the piece too dark in certain areas. Other times the use of overlapping wasn't the technique i should have used but as i went along i found that out. For the next time i try a project that is similar i would ensure to research more about the different techniques used in making certain styles of art.

Reflection:
During this project I found it typically harder to time manage but as the piece came along it got better. Something i would change would be the size of the artwork and the techniques i used. Originally i didn't know which type of pointillist technique i could use but eventually along the way i figured it out. Over all this was my favorite technique i have used this year and i would like to further my skills using it.
