Glass Painting
Looking glass
17.5 cm x 12.5 cm Glass painting August 2020 Exhibition Text: The purpose of this piece is to show through perspective two different versions of the same scene. As an onlooker you can see both perspectives by flipping the piece to see either the female or male in the front or back of the piece. This piece depicts the relationship between two people who feel close at heart but aren't reachable through physical affection. Oftentimes long distances relationships or friendships create a bond but is the bond real if there's always a distance. |
Inspiration
This piece was inspired by the reverse painting artist Regina Reim. Reim's piece was painted on glass in a way that would show the viewer a clear view of their painting through the glass while on the back you can see the layers of paint placed on top of the back of the glass to make a clean affect on the front. This untitled piece is one example of the many abstract paintings she has done. Regina Reim the contemporary artist was born in 1965, Dahn, Germany.

Planning
During this stage I had to plan on what it was I wanted to create. I thought of potentially creating drawings or other 2D pieces but ultimately I ended up deciding on making a sculptural painting. Then traced the size of the glass onto the sketch book and made a few sketches. I began by trying to sketch random positions of people in my sketch book to keep my common theme, relationships/relation.

Process
To begin this I started by planning out the project. Then I took the sketchbook with the sketches I made and chose which one I wanted to make the piece into. The sketch I chose was the one with a pair of people, one on front and the other on the other side. After this i grabbed the glass and a blue dry erase marker and tried to draw out the sketch onto one side of the glass. After doing the front i did the back as well but the opposite of the front. Then I traced the back portion of the glass onto the sketch book to have two drawing to trace onto the glass after erasing the expo marker. In order to get the drawing onto the paper I had to put my pencil under the glass and allow the light to reflect the expo marker onto the paper. |
Once i had two sketches I erased the expo dry erase marker off of the glass and I placed it on top of one of the sketches I then traced it out. After that I flipped the glass over and traced the other side in yellow sharpie to be able to differentiate the two perspectives while painting on each side. When both sides were outlined with sharpie I started by picking a side and painted the hair of the male first then came across a few challenges I had to overcome. Some being the opacity of the paint wasn't at the level the color should have been, another was the texture of the piece, some of the paint began to clump rather than lay down well. In order to over come these challenges I had to layer the paint but also place it as thinly as posible to ensure the paint wouldn't build up too much on top of itself.

Experimentation:
While I was collecting materials I noticed that I made a mistake by grabbing the wrong paint because of this I had to make do and layer on the paint more than if I had a specific type of glass paint. while painting the paint would be too clear or wouldn't stick onto the paint unless I would wait for it to dry for a while before doing another layer, this led to making many layers of the same color onto the glass. Another thing that seemed like a problem when I started was the sharpie peeking through the paint. This was not something I expected when i began painting and was something that frustrated me during this process. Because of this I had to take a break, but of course come back to it and try my best to solve this challenge. To overcome this I realized after a while that layering the paint and waiting for it to dry was the best option.

Reflection:
During this project I found it hard to layer the colors especially because they were very translucent. This caused me to have to layer the paint multiple times. There were times I accidentally scratched off paint because of that i had to redue a few sections. I think that there are many things I can do better in my next project for example I could try to improve my painting skills, and detail orientation. Overall I want my painting to reflect my theme of relationships.
